Last week I had a daunting yet exciting realisation that many of us may now be working for Google, at least for the people trying to transfer a business offline to online. I went to the ExCel center in London for the Digital Marketing Show to discover what condition the industry is in and where it might be going, an exciting trip that taught me a lot and will be very beneficial for my career. I couldn’t resist travelling in style over the river : )

ImageThis was one of the magnificent views across the river on the Emirates cable car, let’s hope TFL (Transport For London) doesn’t drop the Emirates sponsorship deal like Chelsea Football Club did back in 2004. Could end in tears!

Once I arrived at the ExCel center I found it a little odd that no timetable program was issued and you basically wandered hoping to find things that may be of interest for you by looking on the screens, this was the case for a few people I spoke to anyway- I downloaded the timetable on my phone and used this. The picture above is for the ‘Like Minds’ stage which didn’t appear on the program but had some amazing speakers, of whom that I see on this stage were:

Rory Sutherland, Vice Chairman Ogilvy & Mather he focused his talk on how digital media and behavioural data might finally provide us with a robust way of understanding human behaviour.

Guy Levine, the CEO and Founder of Return On Digital. Guy made me extremely excited, not only has he won industry accolades for campaigns he has worked on including the Big Chip’s he was also named Entrepreneur of the Year. He thrashed around swearing announcing that his mum wouldn’t be happy with his ‘pitch’, he may not admit it but ultimately he was pitching at a ferocious speed. Shouting about 4 years work him and his team have been working on, his company work on SEO (search engine optimisation), PPC (Pay Per Click), Social Media and Conversion Rate Optimisation Specialists.

With the general buzz being around the center questioning is SEO dead? Similar chat to what we had after the Panda and Penguin updates from Google, if you are not familiar with these updates Google it! Guy Levine answered the way we understood search engine optimisations is not the way we should approach it in the future? We should see him and understand all the conflicting factors. Which brings me to ‘Do We All Work For Google’? As Google have updated the way it works calling the latest one the ‘Hummingbird’, which is the first biggest change to the way they run their algorithms since 2001. The general natter was based around reinforcing your optimisations and questioning what is needed to stay highly ranked in the world of the web, easily answered by ‘content is king’! Google want to do what Google do best, provide an answer to a question as quick as possible. The Hummingbird update (as I understand it) will bypass all the spammy tactics aquired by some websites, to cut the bullshit amongst the proliferated field of ‘search’. To hopefully give an equal chance to people who cannot acquire acquisitions to push them further up the search rankings, if you have strong content and can market it well you’ll be in safe hands. Blows the Machiavellian theory right out the water, be good to the people you serve with your content online and you will be served well in sales offline! Ha ha a modern twist on it anyway, perhaps I should use a genuine quote in context to mine above and bare in mind the title of ‘Do We All Work For Google’-

“He who wishes to be obeyed must know how to command.” Niccolo Machiavelli

So hearing that content is king and you’ll be rewarded for quality and honesty, questions were slowly dispersed and mass hysteria was gently controlled as the day unfolded, albeit a little over the top to start with but excitement was built correctly to keep people feeling involved. I speak as a complete outsider as in reality that’s exactly what I was, my name tag appeared to say Brad Frewin- ‘Media Consultant’ and I was working for ‘BoldFly Clothing’. I guess I’m consulting through my blog and I have recently started a t-shirt and jumper company- http://www.boldflyclothing.com/ (Very early days).

So this was half of my day spent at the Digital Marketing Show, my next blog will continue to comment the tone of the show as I felt it was. Next half ‘The Role of Content’! Unfortunately I have to job hunt because knowing all of this and writing about it gets me no money, sadly.
